We Take A Close Look At The DeNight Special 50 ARF

You have heard me say before that RC airplane guys love all airplanes and the race planes of the 1950’s and 60’s are some of their favorites. These airplanes all make excellent modeling subjects with their cheek cowls, streamlined wheel pants and bubble canopies. The early ones were of typical fabric and wood construction so models using the same construction materials duplicate the full size airplanes very well. The Hangar 9 DeNight Special is one of those models. Fiberglass cowlings and wheel pants make it easy for an ARF builder to finish this airplane and be very proud of the final result. But racers are all about flying and the DeNight is an excellent flying model that any intermediate pilot will be successful with. It requires at least a 4 channel (preferably 6) radio with two aileron servos on a “Y” cord or using the flaperon mix in a more advanced computer radio. A 50 size engine fits nicely in the cheek cowl with only a small cutout for the muffler. A .72-.82 size 4-stroke engine fits just as well. Performance is brisk at full throttle but slows nicely for landings. The trim scheme on this UltraCote covered airplane duplicates the original and makes for a beautiful finished model.
